We want to say thank you: first, for the trust placed in us by our partner companies and customers. And second, for the many good conversations and absorbing discussions that motivated us over the past year to keep developing Unwired Networks.
Now that 2023 is here, let us look back together on a remarkable 2022, a year in which the Unwired team planned and delivered numerous large projects. Between project work, new business, and trade fairs, a lot of groundwork went on behind the scenes to develop Unwired Edge Cloud further and refine the business model.
Our Year in Numbers
In 2022 we commissioned 626 routers and access points in 203 trains and 350 routers in 350 buses. On top of that, more than 500 stationary devices were delivered and commissioned.
In December alone, more than 6 networks went into service where Unwired supplied both the passenger Wi-Fi and the hardware for stable application connectivity on board: the Taunus network in the Rhine-Main region (Regionalverkehre Start Deutschland GmbH), the Elbe-Spree network (ODEG – Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn GmbH), S-Bahn Bremen (NordWestBahn), the ELA network (DESAG), and the Berchtesgaden–Ruhpolding network (Bayerische Regiobahn).
We are also delighted to welcome new partners to our network. Together with Bondix Intelligence we will re-implement WAN bonding in the coming year. Expect even more secure and stable connections, including in demanding environments and poor coverage.

New Product Features in 2022

On the product side we focused our investment on stability, security, and a long list of new features. The new features include:
Unwired Edge Core:
- support for new hardware models (routers and access points for rail, automotive, and industrial use from a wide range of vendors)
- support for many new modems and numerous 5G models
- new network configuration options
- improvements to uplink aggregation
- many new telemetry data points (coming soon as an API)
- new data center infrastructure for far more bandwidth and failover-ready, redundant data services (aggregation, public Wi-Fi, VPN services)
Unwired Edge WiFi:
- interactive elements such as stop requests, connection protection, and an emergency call button
- seamless roaming for online and offline portals
- offline portals with multi-Gbit/s guest bandwidth
- broad integration interfaces for content and third-party portals
Unwired Edge Compute:
- improved container runtime
- configmap support for containers
- support for multiple LAN interfaces per container
- automatic provisioning of API credentials for containers
- telemetry and metrics for container applications
- integration of software-defined networking (SDN) such as Tailscale and ZeroTier
Events
2022 brought plenty of highlights on the events side. Alongside numerous conferences and conventions, exhibiting at two major trade fairs was a particular pleasure. We presented our new stand concept and new focus topics for the first time in May at IT-Trans in Karlsruhe. At InnoTrans in September, edge computing and edge networking were the central themes of our stand. Our warm thanks to everyone who visited for the engaging conversations — we would be glad to see you again at future fairs and events.
