Passenger Wi-Fi, onboard network, and device management for rail operators.

Passenger Wi-Fi, train-to-ground communication, and centralized device management from one platform: Unwired Edge Cloud delivers rail operators the onboard network components typically required in regional and long-distance rail tender documents — passenger Wi-Fi with captive portal, train-to-ground communication via WAN bonding (4G, 5G, Starlink), and device management from a hardware-agnostic platform.

Passenger Wi-Fi as a Contracted Service

Procure passenger Wi-Fi, captive portal, and reporting as one package.

The platform's Wi-Fi stack covers the typical line items from regional rail spec sheets as one integrated package: captive portal with CMS for branding and passenger information, configurable login methods, bandwidth management, and reporting per line and vehicle. Unwired Networks is set up as an ISP and takes on telecom-law responsibility under TKG, GDPR, and WiFi4EU.

Stable Connectivity

Bridge dead zones, tunnel stretches, and carrier handovers in a controlled way.

Multiple uplinks run in parallel per onboard router: 4G/5G from different carriers, Starlink/LEO, and fixed-line in the depot. WAN bonding aggregates bandwidth at the packet level, and failover kicks in without dropping sessions. Policy routing separates passenger and operational traffic, with bandwidth reservable per segment.

NIS2, CRA, CLC/TS 50701...

Prove NIS2, CRA, and CLC/TS 50701 requirements straight from the platform.

Centralized configuration as templates, idempotent rollout even after offline periods, per-device version history, and granular access rights address the typical requirements of NIS2, CLC/TS 50701 (based on IEC 62443-3-2/-3-3), the KRITIS "Transport and Traffic" sector, and the EU Cyber Resilience Act, all from the platform side. You deliver configuration and update status on request, instead of collecting it per device for every audit.

Lower Penalty Risk

Generate service-level reports from data you can actually analyze.

Observability covers cellular quality per modem, uplink availability, WAN bonding performance, captive portal sessions, and configuration status. Data feeds into Grafana, Prometheus, or your existing reporting pipelines. From this historical data, you generate availability reports that the contracting authority accepts as contract evidence.

Certified Rail Hardware

Standards-compliant onboard IT.

Rail-specific hardware standards are a procurement matter, not a software one. Unwired Edge Cloud supports onboard routers and access points from multiple manufacturers that meet EN 50155, EN 50121, and EN 45545-2. The choice stays open, while the software stack stays the same.

Legally Compliant Passenger Wi-Fi

Meet tender requirements for portal and content, without building it yourself.

The captive portal and onboard portal run from the cloud or locally on the onboard router. Login methods (click-through, SMS, email) are configurable, and content is managed through a CMS with no HTML knowledge required. Unwired Networks is the ISP in supported regions and takes on responsibility under TKG and GDPR.

10+ Years of Support

Investment protection for onboard IT, for ten years and beyond.

Rail transit contracts run long; hardware lifecycles in the IT world run short. The platform closes that gap: long software support, form-fit-function swap compatibility between supported devices, and update paths that don't break the architecture. Investment protection that outlasts the contract award.

No Vendor Lock-In

Choose hardware to match the spec sheet.

During the proposal phase, it's often not yet clear exactly which hardware will go in. The platform lets you commit at the solution level and choose the hardware later from the supported range. If a manufacturer discontinues a device or lead times increase, the software stack stays the same.

Zero-Touch Configuration

Commission entire vehicle fleets without a technician at the device.

On first power-up, the router authenticates against the cloud platform by certificate and pulls its configuration. On-site work is limited to installation, antenna connection, and power. Parallel rollouts across multiple workshops and depots run through the same mechanism, eliminating errors from manual configuration.

Extend What's There

One router for PIS, APC, and diagnostics apps.

Container virtualisation on vehicle routers replaces dedicated boxes for individual apps. Passenger information (e.g. IBIS-IP-capable PIS daemons per VDV 301-2), automatic passenger counting, CCTV preprocessing, and sensor apps all run isolated on the same device. Push updates through the same cloud console you use for network configuration.

Built to last the length of your transit contract.

Lower Penalty Risk
Historical data on uplinks, Wi-Fi, and train-to-ground communication documents agreed availability per line, vehicle, and contract period.
10+ Year Lifecycle
Onboard IT stays productive for the length of the contract.
Hardware Freedom
Multiple certified rail manufacturers in one console.
ISP Responsibility
TKG and GDPR obligations covered through Unwired Networks.
Idempotent Rollout
Rollout status catches up automatically, tolerant of delays.
Audit Evidence on Demand
Configuration, update, and access history are available centrally. NIS2, CRA, and CLC/TS 50701 audits, without collecting data per device.

FAQ

Unwired Edge Cloud runs on vehicle routers and access points from multiple hardware partners. Their devices meet EN 50155 (vibration resistance, voltage tolerance, electronic equipment on rail vehicles), EN 50121 (electromagnetic compatibility in railway environments), and EN 45545-2 (fire protection on rail vehicles). Certification documents are held by the respective hardware vendor. You specify the functional requirements from the tender; the cloud platform stays hardware-agnostic. Hardware is chosen from the pool of certified partner devices.

Unwired Edge Cloud covers core tender items: passenger Wi-Fi with Captive Portal, login flows, and content; vehicle-to-ground communication across multiple carriers and Starlink; availability reports via observability; device management with audit functions; hardware compliant with EN 50155, EN 50121, and EN 45545. Unwired Networks operates as the Internet Service Provider and assumes the corresponding obligations under TKG and GDPR. ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certifications are in place. NIS2 and CLC/TS 50701 requirements are addressed at the platform level. During tender submission, specifying the functional requirements is enough — fulfillment runs through the platform and the partner ecosystem.

On first power-on, the vehicle router authenticates to the cloud platform with a certificate and pulls its configuration. In rail operations that means: the depot installs the device, connects the antennas, done. Configuration and application state are pulled as soon as the cellular or wired uplink comes up. When hardware is swapped during regular service, the replacement device commissions itself the same way — no IT staff on site required.

Availability records come from continuously captured telemetry data: uplink reachability, Wi-Fi sessions per vehicle, device heartbeat, and configuration consistency. From this data, monthly or quarterly availability reports can be generated for the public transport authority. Granularity goes down to individual vehicles and route segments — useful for locating coverage gaps and weakly connected stretches.

At least ten years of software support for supported hardware platforms, including security patches and functional updates. Cloud components are continuously maintained and developed; APIs are designed for version stability with documented deprecation paths, so connected systems (BI, monitoring, reporting pipelines) keep working across version changes. Investment protection is part of the contract, not a roadmap promise.

Unwired Edge Cloud is built on zero-trust principles with documented STRIDE threat modeling. Unwired Networks is certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 27001. Configuration templates, version history, and granular access rights address the requirements of CLC/TS 50701 (Railway Cybersecurity, based on IEC 62443-3-2 and -3-3). For NIS2, the operational building blocks — risk management, incident reporting, update processes — map directly to the platform: configuration and update history, access logs, and inventory data are all available centrally. For the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA, main obligations from December 2027), long-term software support, vulnerability handling across the product lifecycle, signed automatic security updates, and a controlled software supply chain cover the core control axes.
